Updates Evolve Finance News May 2021 Our Sellafield 6 The column from Jamie Reed, Sellafield Ltd head of corporate affairs EVOLVE This month’s manifesto theme – that we care about our community and environment – couldn’t be more relevant as our country hopefully begins to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic. Leading from the Front In November this year, the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) takes place in Glasgow; bringing together world leaders to assess the collective global response to climate change and map the necessary next steps. It’s likely that the run up to the conference will focus not just upon the actions of governments in caring for the environment, but businesses too. It’s never been the case that any government in any part of the world can legislate independently to avert climate change. This problem requires a collective response across nations and a collective response between governments and businesses – and in meeting the climate change challenge, businesses are critically important. At Sellafield, we know that what we do matters and that the consequences of our activities don’t end at our site gates or at the door of Hinton House. Through our manifesto development process, colleagues across the business told us that caring for the environment and our communities is hugely important to them and we’re already ahead of the curve. The best modern businesses attend to their responsibilities in respect of all of their stakeholders; whether that’s through shareholders, customers, communities or taxpayers. We’ve occupied this space for many years and the development of our social impact work through SiX is arguably the best illustration of this from any business anywhere in the UK. From investing in the Warrington Youth Zone, to projects as significant and diverse as Campus Whitehaven, the ‘Seabins’ project or river restoration through the ‘People on the Keekle’, caring about our communities and our environment is a key part of who we are and what we are about; and the best is yet to come.
