Our Sellafield - May 2021

Business Our Manifesto Environment Safety 21 WE CARE ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENT “ Protecting our community and the environment, today and tomorrow, is at the heart of our purpose – it’s what we do. But we can do more – from rigorous application of the waste management hierarchy, to conserving energy to challenging design tradition. Protecting our community, saving our environment and economic growth – these are one and the same challenge. Climate change, energy security, well-being, opportunity and empowerment – we must join the dots and make Sellafield part of the solution to the whole. ” Mark Neate, Environment, Safety and Security Director “ I don’t think I always appreciated where I live and our surroundings until lockdown. I was able to get out into and appreciate our countryside so much more. I want to get more involved in tidying up the litter I have seen in our community lately. It is so important to me to look after our environment, the place where we live and keep it clean for our wildlife and for the future generations. I love where I live and want it to stay a beautiful place to be enjoyed by everyone. ” Tracy Jacklin, Technical Administrator “ It means that we understand that our operations and people have a direct impact on the environment and the influence we have to our local communities. You can see from the number of social impact projects over recent years that we care about our communities and enhancing them where we can. The redevelopment of the Bus Station in Whitehaven is an example of this. Having seen it go from a derelict eyesore to what is now – it will provide an innovative and exciting facility for the whole community to access and benefit from. We never had anything like this as kids growing up in Whitehaven. This exemplifies our manifesto theme. ” Paul Beck, Energy Improvements Manager “ For me this theme covers the whole world around us; how we choose to interact and live with each other and best use our shared capabilities and resources. As our technology continues to grow, leading to our reach continuing to increase and intensify, I believe it vitally important that we are always mindful of the lasting impact our choices and actions, big or small, can and will have on our individual and collective future prosperity and progression. ” MatthewWelsh, S&R Senior Emergency Management Planner We care about our community and environment is this month’s manifesto theme. This covers everything from operating sustainably as a site, to protecting our environment and supporting new opportunities for our local communities. By embracing this theme we can all have a positive impact on our community and environment around us. Here’s what ‘we care’ means to some of our people.
