Our Sellafield - May 2021
Business Our Manifesto Environment Safety 13 WE CARE ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENT “We’ve been doing this for around 5 years now, and our knowledge has grown with each project. We’ve learned what has worked and what hasn’t and adapted for the next challenge. “The laser snake was a good example of this. We learned about the benefits of laser cutting, whilst understanding that the ventilation system needed optimisation. This led us on to the Krantz re-cleanable ventilation system for subsequent systems. One of the biggest recent active demonstrators is the skip-size reduction facility, which will laser cut the redundant skips from the First Generation Magnox Storage Pond. This reduces the space needed and the cost associated with storage and eventual disposal. Chris added: “Learning is at the heart of the active demonstrator programme. Each active demonstrator has a learning plan, which helps develop our approach for remediating the site. “It is really exciting to see Sellafield embracing new technology and approaches and the work that we are doing features heavily in the Enterprise Strategy. It feels like we are on the cusp of making a real change.” There are five current active demonstrator projects in development. We’ll be showcasing these in our communications in the coming months.
